Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres set to sign for Liverpool today
Jul 3 2007
by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO TORRES was due on Merseyside today to complete his £26.5m signing for Liverpool.
But Peter Crouch will not be the man to make way for the Spaniard in Rafa Benitez’s squad.
The England striker’s Anfield future was cast in doubt at the weekend when it was reported that he was the only Liverpool player with two years remaining on his contract who has NOT been invited to open talks about a new deal.
But Reds chief executive Rick Parry rubbished the report.
Story continues

“It is not true that he is the only player not to have been approached about a new deal and he is very much part of Rafa Benitez’s future plans,” he said.
But with Torres now joining Crouch, Dirk Kuyt, Andriy Voronin and Craig Bellamy on Liverpool’s striking roster, one forward is likely to make way – with Bellamy the favourite.
Torres was due to have a medical today and could be unveiled as Liverpool’s record signing tomorrow.
But the likelihood of Gabriel Heinze joining him at Anfield receded as Manchester United reacted with horror at the prospect of their Argentinean defender joining their fiercest rivals.
There is no get-out clause in Heinze’s contract, and United have made it clear they will make it difficult for the player to leave.
Heinze is currently on Copa America duty in Venezuela – he played alongside Javier Mascherano in Argentina’s 4-2 defeat of Colombia last night – and no decision is expected on his future until Argentina’s tournament has ended.
But while Heinze has told Anfield officials he would relish the chance to become the first player since Phil Chisnall in 1964 to move directly from United to Liverpool, United will resist all efforts to prise him away.
After Patrice Evra took Heinze’s place at Old Trafford last season and the Argentinean was seeking a much improved contract offer, United let it be known they would be open to offers for the player.
The player has either convinced Alex Ferguson of his form and fitness, or United are mortified at Liverpool snatching one of their defensive stars.

LIVERPOOL v PSV

PSV Eindhoven 0-3 Liverpool
By Mandeep Sanghera

Gerrard is now Liverpool's leading goalscorer in the European CupLiverpool powered to a resounding win over PSV Eindhoven to all but book their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Steven Gerrard thumped in a header from Steve Finnan's cross to put the Reds ahead and become Liverpool's leading scorer in European Cup competition.
PSV were ripe for the taking and the Reds showed no mercy as John Arne Riise thundered in a long-range strike.
Peter Crouch put the gloss on the win when he nodded in another Finnan cross.
News conference: Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez
Liverpool had to be patient at the start of the first leg of the quarter-final and probe for an opening as PSV adopted a conservative approach despite being at home.

Well done, lads! Brilliant performance, brilliant result
WI
The Dutch side's approach seemed to stem from losing 5-1 in their last league fixture at the Philips Stadion during a poor run which has seen them fail to win in their last four outings.
The Reds were allowed to dominate possession and almost took advantage from a corner.

Crouch (left) and Gerrard (right) were both set up by Finnan (centre)
Jamie Carragher made good contact with a header and PSV keeper Heurelho Gomes had to dive at full stretch to palm the ball round the post.
PSV sprang a rare attack to surprise Liverpool and an unmarked Mika Varynen at the far post had his angled volley deflected over.
Liverpool heeded the warning and Finnan made a bursting run on the right before crossing for Gerrard to power a header low into the corner of the net.
The goal was Gerrard's 15th in the European Cup and he overtook Ian Rush as the club's record goalscorer in the competition.
Gerrard's landmark effort also forced PSV into a change of plan and attempt a more attacking game.
But Liverpool comfortably kept their out-of-form rivals at arm's length and were nearly gifted a second straight after the break.
A misunderstanding between keeper Gomes and his defender gave Xabi Alonso a sight of goal from 18 yards only for the Spaniard to slice his shot off target.
PSV were uncertain and nervous in defence and a stray backpass let Riise unleash a trademark left-foot thunderbolt into the top corner.
Striker Patrick Kluivert came on for PSV as they tried to salvage something from the game but Crouch headed in from eight yards from Finnan's pin-point delivery.
Liverpool controlled the rest of the game after building up an apparently unassailable lead and the only setback for the visitors was a serious-looking injury to left midfielder Fabio Aurelio.

Getting the new stadium right must be our priority

Getting the new stadium right must be our priority
Mar 16 2007
by Sam Johnstone, Liverpool supporter, Liverpool Daily Post

WITH the euphoria of Barcelona now behind us, it's time to start concentrating on regaining third place in the League.
Aston Villa won't be easy to beat, despite their lacklustre form over the last few months. Martin O'Neill is a manager I admire very much but I do expect us to come away with three points, though, as the Barca effect will hopefully push our league form.
The break in games has given fans the chance to digest both the Barca game, and the arrival of the new owners. They've made their mark straightaway, with the suspension of works on the new stadium the first sign that Gillett and Hicks mean business.
Whether an 80,000 capacity is required for footballing reasons I'm not sure, but it seems obvious that they have other uses in mind for the new ground. It's a shame that work has stopped so soon after starting, but getting the new stadium right is a priority.
I was more worried by the news that a number of loans had been obtained by the new owners for their purchase of the club. Though very different from the Glazer takeover of United, it's still a bit disturbing to hear that the club may have to service the interest payments on the loans. Gillett and Hicks are the guarantors, so it shouldn't affect the club too much, but it was slightly off-putting all the same.
With the future looking secure it seems perverse to look back (something all Reds are always accused of, but when you have a history like ours it's hard not to reminisce!) but I've been thinking about my first ever game at Anfield which was 30 years ago today.
I was lucky enough to lose my Reds virginity at the St Etienne game, and though I can't remember a thing about the game, I do recall how I felt when I left the ground as a 10-year-old. If I had known such words at the time I would have said exhilarated, but all I know is that I was equal parts scared, excited and shattered.
Maybe now, 30 years after our first big cup win the nation will honour the architect of our dominance in granting Bob Paisley the knighthood he deserves?
Bob may be gone, but the strength of feeling is still there evidenced by the 45,000-odd signatures asking for recognition.
Come on Tony Blair, you know it's the right thing to do.

English trio kept in draw

English trio kept apart in draw

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United were kept apart in the Champions League quarter-final draw.
Jose Mourinho's side face Valencia, while Liverpool were paired with Arsenal's conquerors PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United meet AS Roma.
The draw was also made for the semi-final, and it will see Chelsea and Liverpool meet in a repeat of the 2005 clash if they both emerge victorious.
Manchester United will play AC Milan or Bayern Munich if they beat AS Roma.
All the Premiership sides are likely to be happy with their draw, with the prospect left open for an all-English final in Athens on 23 May.
Liverpool have already beaten PSV in the group stages, winning 2-0 at Anfield after drawing 0-0 in Holland - and they have the added incentive of having the second leg at home.
606: DEBATE
It's good news that the English sides have avoided each other. Hopefully they will all progress
CR
PSV coach Ronald Koeman, however, gets another chance to prove he is the nemesis of Premiership clubs.
He sent Manchester United and Liverpool crashing out of the competition last season while he was with Benfica, and engineered Arsenal's downfall in this year's tournament.
If Chelsea and Liverpool go through, Mourinho will have his sights set on revenge for their defeat against Rafael Benitez's side at the same stage two years ago.
If they both go through, the second leg will again be at Anfield, where Luis Garcia's controversial goal sent Liverpool to the final, where they beat AC Milan on penalties.
Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson will hold high hopes of reaching his first final since 1999 after drawing dark horses Roma and facing a possible meeting with AC Milan or Bayern.
But Ferguson says United must be cautious: "We respect Roma's result against Lyon, they have great players like Daniele De Rossi and Mancini.
"Obviously we do not look beyond this game. We must concentrate on this game and we are looking forward to it.
We must be cautious. We don't want to make the same mistake as last year
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez
"We have never played Roma before. That is the great excitement in Europe, playing teams you've never met."
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti admitted it was a tricky draw, but said his side has nothing to fear from the Premiership leaders.
"Unlike us, Man Utd have a lot of experience in this competition and a lot of tradition," said Spalletti.
"But we must be optimistic. I have confidence in my team, we have every intention of going all the way."
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says his side will not be taking PSV lightly, even though the Reds have beaten the Dutch side in the group stages.
"PSV are a very good team," said Benitez. "They have improved since we last met and showed their quality by beating Arsenal. There are no favourites.
"Sometimes knowing your opponents can be an advantage but sometimes it can be a disadvantage as they'll know us too.
"We must be cautious. We don't want to make the same mistake as last year."
PSV coach Ronald Koeman admitted he was disappointed to be drawn against Liverpool once again.
"I do think that all clubs are tricky, but the fact is that we already had them in the group stage," said the Dutch legend.
"You want to go somewhere else - all other clubs would have been nice. But we are glad that we are part of this stage of the tournament."

AGG 2-2

Liverpool 0-1 Barcelona (agg 2-2)
Liverpool win on away goals
By Phil McNulty

Jamie Carragher celebrates Liverpool reaching the last eightEidur Gudjohnsen's late goal left Liverpool hanging on against Barcelona before reaching the last eight of the Champions League on away goals.
The former Chelsea star rounded Pepe Reina after 75 minutes to leave Liverpool, who had dominated, living on their nerves in the closing stages.
John Arne Riise and Momo Sissoko both struck the bar as Liverpool left Barcelona's stars in the shade.
Ronaldinho hit a post, but Liverpool deserved to reach the quarter-final.
News conference: Frank Rijkaard
606: DEBATE
Give your thoughts on Liverpool's performance
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez named the team that won so brilliantly in the Nou Camp, and they did everything but extend that lead in a pulsating first 45 minutes.
Barcelona's array of attacking riches, Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi - were barely seen.
Riise's trademark shooting was used to thunderous effect in the early stages, firing inches wide with an angled drive after seven minutes, then rattling the bar from 20 yards three minutes later.
What do you think? Rate the players
Sissoko had an eventful first half, which included a yellow card for a foul on Deco that rules him out of Liverpool's next Champions League game.
Barcelona engineered a remarkable escape to keep the tie alive after 25 minutes.
Victor Valdes produced a stunning double save from Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt before captain Carles Puyol scrambled Riise's header off the line.
Barcelona's nerves were fraying, and they were fortunate again when Valdes' poor clearance landed at the feet of Sissoko 40 yards out, but his speculative shot bounced off the top of the bar with with the goal unguarded.
Ronaldinho burst into life seven minutes after the interval, escaping three defenders before striking the outside of the post as Anfield held its breath.
The Brazilian's strike partner Eto'o looked short of match fitness, and it was no surprise when he was substituted on the hour by Ludovic Giuly.
Steven Gerrard was Liverpool's best attacking outlet, shooting wide after a typical surge, then testing Valdes with a powerful drive.
Former Chelsea star Gudjohnsen was sent on for defender Lilian Thuram in a desperate move by Barcelona - and the move paid off when he put Barcelona ahead on the night with 15 minutes left.
Messi played in the Icelander, who slipped away from Jermaine Pennant and rounded Pepe Reina for a cool finish.
Gerrard was again forcing Liverpool forward, and once again Valdes was forced to block at the near post as Barcelona knew they had to go for broke.
Substitute Peter Crouch shot over from close range in the dying seconds, but it did not prove costly.
Liverpool: Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Arbeloa, Gerrard, Sissoko, Alonso, Riise (Aurelio 77), Kuyt (Crouch 89), Bellamy (Pennant 67).Subs Not Used: Dudek, Hyypia, Mascherano, Zenden.

Liverpool v Man Utd

Gerrard out to dent Man Utd hopes

Watch more of the interview... Football FocusSat 3 March, from 1210 GMTLiverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits the chance to dent Manchester United's title hopes will add "extra spice" to the game between the two on Saturday.
United's lead could be cut to six points if they lose and Chelsea, who have a game in hand, beat Portsmouth.
"It adds an extra spice to the game," the midfielder told Football Focus.
"Although there are only three points at stake, the game means that extra bit more and we would love to get three points from it."
Liverpool have not won a league match against United at Anfield since November 2001 and Gerrard is determined to change that poor run of form in what he calls a "massive fixture".
"We are obviously going to give everything we have got to try and change that record. That hurts deeply."
But the all-action midfielder knows United will be a tough side to overcome and, despite the talents of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, has cited their defence as a key factor in their success.
He added: "You have to admire the way that they are playing at the moment. They're defending really well and that's what people forget.
Everyone talks about the attacking players like Rooney and Ronaldo, who are world class players and playing really well at the moment, but you have to give credit to the keeper and back four for keeping clean sheets.
"Also the manager as well. He still has that hunger to take them to the top and you have to take your hat off to him."

Liverpool 4-0 Sheff Utd
By John Sinnott

Fowler's Premiership goals this season have all been penaltiesLiverpool followed up their Champions League victory against Barcelona with a comfortable win over Sheffield United.
Two first-half penalties from Robbie Fowler put Liverpool in total control.
Steven Gerrard won both penalties after he was fouled first by Rob Kozluk and then by Nick Montgomery, with Fowler finishing each time with precision.
After the break Sami Hyypia's low shot made it 3-0, before Gerrard added the fourth with a superb individual goal after he was set up by a Fowler pass.
The win moved Liverpool four points clear of fourth-placed Arsenal, while defeat for United leaves them with some work to do as regards securing their Premiership place for next season.
Liverpool's starting line-up showed seven changes from the team that had won in the Nou Camp, with Javier Mascherano making his debut and Jerzy Dudek playing for the first time in the league this season.
606 DEBATE: Your reaction to LIverpool's victory
Having spent much of his time on the sidelines at West Ham, Mascherano played well, allowing Gerrard plenty of freedom to move forward.
The Argentine midfielder had a hand in Gerrard's goal, picking out Fowler with a incisive pass in the build-up.
As for Dudek, having conceded nine goals in his previous two games, he had the satisfaction of keeping a clean sheet.
United did not create a serious chance until the closing stages when Rob Hulse rattled the bar with a close-range shot.
Fowler must wish he could play United every weekend.
On the opening day of the season a disputed penalty had salvaged Liverpool a point against United, with Fowler successfully converting the spot-kick.
Prior to Saturday's game that had been the only Premiership goal Fowler has scored this season, but thanks to United's overly close attentions to Gerrard, the Liverpool striker found himself on the cusp of a hat-trick by the 25th minute.
Kozluk fouled Gerrard for the first penalty, stopping the Liverpool captain from making a run for a corner.
Montgomery then hauled Gerrard down as the Liverpool midfileder threatened to unleash a shot after being released by Dirk Kuyt's clever header.
Fowler went to Kenny's left for the first penalty and then changed sides for the second, each time sending the ball into the corner of the net.
Hyypia's goal was something of a red-letter day for the Finn as it was the first time he has scored in the league this season.
In the opening half the Liverpool defender had set up Mark Gonzalez with a couple of raking passes and on 70 minutes he got forward for a corner to fire a left-footed shot past Paddy Kenny.
Gerrard's goal capped a professional Liverpool performance as their captain's deft control and raking shot saw him claim his fifth league goal of the season.
The only downside for Liverpool was the loss of Peter Crouch, who went off with bloodied face after the first penalty was awarded when he got a boot to the head from Hulse.

End of Barca's European Dreams

End Of Barca's European Dreams by Varughese Rajan
Last night 2-1 defeat to Liverpool drops curtain on Barcelona's Champions League dream of this year. The most embarrassing and worrying factor for Frank Rijkaard about the defeat is the ease with which it came searching for Liverpool. Liverpool did not have to play anywhere near their ability to win this game, as Barca played perfect host by delivering the match in a palette to them. This does not come as a surprise as the Catalans recent performance should have warn this coming. Like against Valencia they have their Defence(yesterday Valdes also) to take the full responsibility of the defeat. But Does putting the blame entirely on the defence solves the mystery? No, I absolutely disagree. The blatant Truth is that its their offence's failures which is putting them in precarious position like this.
Last night Liverpool was anything but spectacular. They might have sticked to their task well, but then Barcelona's players attitude helped them well. Every one of the English commentator were praising their defence for the win, but I cannot agree completely over here. Whenever Barcelona upped the tempo Liverpool's defence was found wanting. If it was not for Sissoko or Carragher it would have been a different story. After the initial exchange of play when Barcelona upped the tempo, it looked like Liverpool is going to have lots of trouble. That phase of the match lasted till Deco's first Goal, in which we saw Barcelona's attacking force raiding the Liverpool territory ball after another. But that lasted only till that Goal came and after that Barcelona decided to sit back and enjoy. I don't find the rationale for such a decision, when you know that Anfield is not such an easy Ground. The tactic should have been to score at least 3 Goals and make the Tie safe.
But if we look deeper we can find that this laid back attitude is causing team more matches this season than players injury or players out of form. There was no explanation for team losing yesterday than this attitude, as Liverpool only had an average Game. Nobody ever saw Gerrard or Alonso on the field. But still they managed to Get two away Goals tell the way Barcelona played. When everyone was expecting the team to come and fire in all cylinders after the break, they were content with holding possession. They very well deserve to lose this match. But they could have tried a little harder so that the fans could walk home with some satisfaction.
It didn't came as a surprise that whenever Barca was able to make some impression in the Liverpool D it came from the right of the field through Messi. He might have seemed a little disillusioned in the second half, but he was the only Barca player along with Puyol who played at least well in the match. Last season Barca's strength were the one touch passing football and the pace they showed. It was the pace that combined along with the one touch football and skill which made them so dangerous. This season if we look carefully they are showing some glimpses of one touch football but they miss the pace completely. It cannot be attributed to the absence of Eto, as when Eto was there the same problem existed. Rijkaard has to address this as early as possible or change the 4-3-3 system to some conventional system. The 4-3-3 system needs the two above mentioned quality to be effective and Barca seems to miss at least one of them this season.
It will be honest to say that Barca's chances in the La Liga also will be diminished in the coming weeks. We have to expect Sevilla moving well ahead of them and may be Valencia will slowly overtake Barca for second spot. This could be a good time to see how good is the young talents we are having in our youth systems - Bojan Krkic, Dos santos, Marc Crosas, Olma etc. Rijkaard should start preparing for the next season from now onwards(forget about this season) and see wherever Barca need reinforcements. Certainly Zaragoza will kick them out of Copa del Rey coming 28th and Liverpool will complete formality by humiliating them with mostly a 2-0 defeat in Anfield.
Still as a Barcelona fan I will stay up late night to watch 2nd leg at Anfield hoping Barca beat them at least with a two goal margin. I will also hope we will win at Zaragoza by two goals(We last time lost their 4-1). You might think I am crazy, then without Hope this world will be a difficult place to live in.

Visiting Liverpool

Visiting Liverpool by Car Hire 3000
If you're travelling to the UK this year, then Liverpool is one city you should certainly consider visiting...
On the west coast of England, Liverpool is famed worldwide for two major exports, music and Football. Hailing from Liverpool the Beatles were arguably the greatest band the world has ever known with a string of number 1's on both sides of the Atlantic, the Beatlemania of the 1960's had not been seen before and not been repeated since. Liverpool has 3 football teams but to dismay of Tranmere and Everton it is Liverpool Football Club that is best known in the world as a result of its all conquering team of the 1970's and 1980's which swept all before it domestic and European competition.
Liverpool grew into a city in the 19th & 20th century where its growth was fuelled by its port which brought in the raw materials from across the empire which fuelled the textile industries of Lancashire and Manchester and then exported the finished products across the World. Like many of England's industrial cities Liverpool suffered real decline in the 1970's and 1980's with its once busy docks falling into virtually disuse. However in recent decades the city decline has been reversed and the city centre revitalised. The derelict docks have now become some of the most sought after accommodation in the city.
Things to do.....
The Cavern Club - Although the original club was demolished in 1973 it was rebuilt in 1984. As the venue where the Beatles were originally discovered its has become a must see for Beatles fans worldwide
Tate Liverpool - Home to biggest collection of Modern and contemporary art in England outside of London the gallery also hosts fascinating temporary exhibitions
Albert Dock - The once run down dock area has now become a haven of beautifully restored listed building and some of the coolest bars and restaurant to be found in the North West
How to get there....
Liverpool John Lennon Airport is situated just 7 miles to the south east of the city centre. One of the oldest airports in the England it is only in recent years that it has grown into a significant international airport. The explosive growth of the low cost carriers in the UK market and the decision of a number of the major charter airline to base aircraft at Liverpool has benefited the airport enormously. It now services 10 airlines flying to over 20 destinations across Europe.

LOST SEASON FOR LIVERPOOL

Lost Season For Liverpool? by ecobika
Lost Season For Liverpool?
By WagerWeb.com and Ecobika Soccer Betting
Liverpool have had the sort of week that can define a season, and it did not go well.
In the space of four days, the Reds twice lost at home to Arsenal -- first exiting the FA Cup at the first hurdle in a 3-1 loss, then suffering a dramatic 6-3 defeat to a young Gunners side in the Carling Cup quarterfinals.
Barring an incredulous repeat of their Champions League victory two years ago -- they must beat reigning Cup holders Barcelona to progress -- Liverpool's hopes of silverware are over for another season -- but worse, injuries suffered this week will put a big dent in their bid to hold on to a top-four place in the Premiership.
Both Mark Gonzalez and Luis Garcia were carried off on Tuesday night. Gonzalez will be out for at least three weeks with a damaged shin, but Garcia's injury was far more serious and he will not play again this season.
That will deny him the opportunity to play against former club Barcelona next month.
Losing the versatile Spanish international is a big blow for Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, who has asked his players to rebound with a big victory away at Watford on Saturday.
"I hope the result will galvanise everyone at the club, we must concentrate on the Premiership and be firmly focused on what is ahead," he said. "We can analyse what has happened in these last two games and use that to our benefit in the future.
"The players now understand how important the Premiership is, and we will be ready to face Watford."
With confidence heavily dented and an away record that hardly boosts confidence -- Liverpool have won three and drawn two of 11 contests on the road -- the Reds face the very real prospect of an upset at Vicarage Road.
WagerWeb.com still heavily favours Liverpool at -200 compared to +500 for the Hornets, but Watford played well in a 2-0 defeat at Anfield earlier in the season, and the relegation-battlers are likely to come at Liverpool -- a recipe for success against a side on edge.
That defeat at Watford could even be contemplated shows how far Liverpool have fallen since preseason predictions that they would challenge for the title.
In the wake of Tuesday's loss, Benitez admitted the club were still miles behind their rivals in building a competitive team.
"We are also looking for young players, but Arsene Wenger has been working on this for 10 years, we have been doing it for just a couple," the Spanish coach said. "But we need to keep trying our best in the market and work quickly if you have the money.
"And if you have money, then you must work at bringing in the best young players. ... If you want top-class players you must spend money, not only at senior level but at youth level too."
Benitez has been busy trying to put that into practice this week, sealing an 18-month loan deal for Argentinian defender Emiliano Insua, a six-month loan for young Italian goalkeeper Sebastian Padelli, as well as pursuing the signing of 20-year-old midfielder Sebastian Leto from Lanus in Argentina.
But they are players for the future.
This season is already looking like another lost campaign for Liverpool.
